Canggu vs Uluwatu: Which Bali Surf Hub Suits You?
Two Bali surf scenes, two completely different rhythms. A no-fluff comparison of crowds, waves, lifestyle and the right surfboards for each.
Canggu and Uluwatu are Bali's two biggest surf hubs — and they couldn't be more different. Choosing the right one for your trip (or your move) makes or breaks your surf. This is what 5 years of toggling between both has taught me.
The waves
Canggu = beach breaks + soft reef breaks. Forgiving, fun, accessible at most levels. Uluwatu = world-class reef breaks. Powerful, hollow, demanding.
The crowds
Canggu is the busiest beginner-to-intermediate scene on Earth. Uluwatu is the most competitive lineup in Indonesia. Both are crowded — just in different flavours.
The lifestyle
- Canggu: cafés, co-working, beach clubs, long lunches, electric scooters
- Uluwatu: villas with pools, dawn patrols, motorbike commutes to the cliffs, quieter nights
The boards
If you're surfing Canggu, your quiver is mid-lengths, longboards and one shortboard. If you're surfing Uluwatu, your quiver is shortboards, step-ups and one fish. The boards on the local market reflect the surf — search a hub to find what locals actually ride.
The verdict
If you're learning, Canggu. If you're advanced and chasing barrels, Uluwatu. If you're intermediate, do a week in each and you'll know which one feels like home.
Frequently Asked Questions
→Which has better waves, Canggu or Uluwatu?
Uluwatu, by a long way — for intermediate-and-up surfers. The Bukit reefs deliver world-tour-quality waves. Canggu has friendlier waves: better for learning, longboarding, and sessions where you don't want a 30-minute paddle.
→Is Uluwatu cheaper than Canggu to stay in?
Not really anymore. Both have premium villas at $200+/night and budget homestays at $20/night. Uluwatu has fewer mid-tier options. For lifestyle: Canggu = nightlife + yoga + cafes; Uluwatu = cliffs + waves + early bedtimes.
→Can I split my trip between both?
Yes, and most experienced surfers do. The drive is 60-90 minutes depending on traffic. A common pattern: 1 week Canggu (recovery, gym, surf practice), 1 week Bukit (Uluwatu, Bingin, Padang). Many keep a Canggu Airbnb and rent a second base in Uluwatu.
