Choosing the Right Surfboard Volume for Your Level

Volume is the single most important number on a surfboard — and the most misunderstood. Here's a clean, practical formula.

Length, width and thickness are personal preferences. Volume is physics. Float is paddle. Paddle is wave count. Wave count is progression. So get this number right.

The formula

Pro tip

Volume (litres) = bodyweight (kg) × multiplier. The multiplier depends on your skill level and the wave.

Multipliers by skill level

  • Beginner (first 30 sessions): 1.4 - 1.6×
  • Improver (paddling for and standing on most waves): 1.0 - 1.2×
  • Intermediate (taking off in the pocket, basic turns): 0.8 - 0.95×
  • Advanced (driving turns, frontside hooks): 0.50 - 0.65×
  • Pro: 0.35 - 0.50× (don't copy them)

Adjust for the wave

Small wave (under shoulder-high)? +5%. Heavy wave (overhead, fast)? -5%. Choppy / windy? +5%. Cold water (you're sluggish)? +5%. Bali is warm so most adjustments here are wave-size related.

When in doubt

Round up. Every honest surfer in their 30s will tell you they wished they'd kept more volume earlier. Volume is your friend.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much volume do I really need at intermediate level?

Bodyweight in kg × 0.55 to 0.65 — so a 75 kg intermediate wants a 41-49 litre board. Below 0.55× you'll struggle on smaller days; above 0.65× you'll ride a high-volume mid-length and miss out on rail-to-rail surfing progression.

Does volume matter more than length?

Yes, by a wide margin. Two boards of identical length but 5 litres apart paddle and catch waves very differently. Modern board design lets a 5'8 grovel-shape have more volume than a 6'2 shortboard. Always ask for litres, not just length.

Should I downsize volume in Bali because the waves are warmer?

No — water temperature has zero direct effect on volume choice. Where Bali differs is the punchier, faster waves at the Bukit (Uluwatu/Bingin) where slightly less volume helps you tuck under the lip. Save volume drops for that progression, not for the climate.
