Day Trips from Canggu — 5 Surf Missions Worth the Drive
Get out of the Canggu bubble. From Medewi's longest left to Lombok's secret reefs, here are the 5 day-trips worth the early alarm.
Canggu is comfortable. That's the problem. Here are five day-missions that snap you out of the routine and remind you why you came to Indonesia.
1. Medewi — 2.5h west
The longest left in the archipelago. Cobblestone point break, 200m+ rides on a clean SW. Bring a longboard or mid-length. Leave Canggu at 03:30 for dawn patrol; you'll be back by 13:00.
2. Bukit half-day — 1h south
If you've never paddled out at Uluwatu, do it. Park at Padang Padang Beach, motor down the cliff, and pick between Padang on a small day or Uluwatu on a head-high one.
3. Nusa Lembongan — full day, ferry
Fast boat from Sanur (40 min, IDR 250-400k return). Three reef breaks within walking distance. Avoid weekends — half of Bali's tourists go too.
4. Keramas in wet season — 1h east
When the trade winds switch (Nov-Mar), Keramas turns on. Early start, perfect right-handers, less than half Canggu's crowd.
5. Lombok — overnight, not a day
Technically not a day trip but the smartest mini-mission. Fast boat from Padang Bai (2h), Desert Point or Ekas reefs are 1.5h further. Go Friday morning, surf 6 sessions, back Sunday night.
Frequently Asked Questions
→Which day trip has the best wave-quality-to-drive-time ratio?
Bukit half-day (Uluwatu or Padang Padang Right). 1 hour drive, world-tour wave quality, full 4-hour session, back in time for lunch. Medewi has longer rides but the 2.5h drive each way limits you to one session unless you stay overnight.
→Is Lombok do-able as an actual day trip?
Realistically, no. Fast boat from Padang Bai is 2 hours each way; from there, Desert Point or Ekas reefs are another 1.5h drive. Best done as a Friday-to-Sunday mini-trip — 6 sessions in 3 days is the right move.
→What's the smartest Sunday morning Canggu escape?
Nusa Lembongan. Fast boat from Sanur at 9 AM, surf Shipwrecks 11-13:00, lunch at the village, evening boat back. Whole-day trip for ~IDR 500k including ferry. Avoid weekends in peak season — half of Bali's day-trippers go too.
