How to Fly with a Surfboard — Airline Rules & Bali Tips
Airline-by-airline board fees, packing tricks that prevent dings, and what to do when DPS baggage tries to refuse your bag.
Bali is one of the easiest international destinations for boards — but airline policies vary wildly. Here's the cheat sheet from someone who's flown 30+ legs in and out of DPS with boards.
Airline fees from major hubs
- Garuda Indonesia: free up to 32kg incl. boards (the win)
- Singapore Airlines: $100-150 per board flight
- Qantas (from Australia): AUD $90-150 per board
- AirAsia / Lion: pre-pay online (~$40), at-airport rate is brutal
- JetStar: ~AUD $80 if pre-booked, double at gate
Packing trick that saves boards
Layered: bubble wrap nose & tail, foam noodles on rails, towels packed inside the bag along the rocker, fin keys removed, two boards stacked deck-to-deck with bubble between them. Bag should be tight when zipped — slack = movement = breakage.
Pro tip
Take a photo of every board's nose, tail and bottom BEFORE check-in. If they're damaged on arrival, you have a 24-hour window to file a claim with the airline desk inside DPS arrivals.
DPS arrivals reality
Boards come out at oversized luggage on the far left of the carousel hall. Allow 30-45 minutes after landing. Don't tip the porters — they'll quote IDR 200k, polite refusal is fine.
Cheaper alternative: buy & resell
If you're staying 3+ weeks, doing the boardbag round-trip rarely makes sense. Buy a used board on PASARA at landing, resell it 2-3 days before flying out. Net cost is often cheaper than airline fees.
Frequently Asked Questions
→Which airline is cheapest for boards into Bali?
Garuda Indonesia — boards travel free up to 32kg, no upcharge. From Australia: Jetstar pre-booked at AUD $80. From Singapore: SQ at $100-150. AirAsia online pre-booking is the cheap budget option (~$40); never pay airport rates.
→How do I prevent dings during the flight?
Layered packing: bubble wrap nose & tail, foam noodles on rails, towels packed inside the bag along the rocker. Two boards stacked deck-to-deck with bubble between them. The bag should be tight when zipped — slack equals movement equals breakage.
→What if my board is damaged on arrival?
Photograph every angle of every board BEFORE check-in. On arrival, immediately go to the airline desk inside DPS arrivals and file a damage claim. You have 24 hours; after that the airline routinely refuses. Without your pre-flight photos, the claim almost always fails.
