Renting a Scooter in Bali — Surfboard Rack, Insurance, Reality

How to rent a scooter that won't fall apart, fit a board rack that won't snap, and avoid the IDR 25M tourist hospital bills.

The scooter is the surfer's universal Bali vehicle. It's also the #1 cause of foreign-tourist hospital bills. Both can be true.

Rental in 3 steps

  • Honda Scoopy or Vario 125 — most reliable, IDR 1.0-1.4M/month
  • Photograph EVERY existing scratch before paying
  • Test the brakes on a flat road before driving away

Board rack options

Side-mount Bondi-style racks fit one board up to 7'2 and bolt onto the foot deck. Most rental shops attach one for IDR 200-300k. Always strap the board with bungee + a backup strap — losing a board on a roundabout is expensive.

Pro tip

An international driving permit (IDP) is legally required AND mandatory for travel insurance to pay out. Yes — even if you've ridden 100k km in Saigon, if you don't have an IDP and you crash, your insurance refuses.

Helmet, dress, mindset

Wear a real helmet (not the rental shop's foam-shell joke). Cover legs and feet — Bali's road rash is a soup of bacteria. Drive at 30-40 km/h max in tourist areas; the local rule is 'whoever's biggest goes first'.

Insurance that actually pays

Most generic travel insurance excludes scooters above 50cc — which is every Bali scooter. World Nomads' 'Explorer' tier and SafetyWing's 'Nomad Insurance' both cover scooters up to 125cc with an IDP. Check your policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need an International Driving Permit?

Yes — for legal AND insurance reasons. Indonesian police will fine you IDR 250k on the spot without one. More importantly, every travel insurance (World Nomads, SafetyWing, etc.) refuses scooter accident claims if you didn't have a valid IDP. Bali's public hospitals charge IDR 25M+ for moderate scooter injuries.

Honda Scoopy or Vario — which is better with a board?

Vario 125 has more torque on hills and a slightly bigger foot deck for the rack, making it better for a longer 7'2 mid-length. Scoopy is lighter and easier in tight Canggu lanes — fine for shortboards up to 6'4. Both are IDR 1.0-1.4M/month.

What insurance covers scooter accidents?

World Nomads 'Explorer' tier and SafetyWing 'Nomad Insurance' both cover scooters up to 125cc — but ONLY if you have a valid IDP at time of accident. Generic travel insurance from credit cards and standard travel agents specifically excludes 'motorcycles above 50cc' which is every Bali scooter.
