Surfing Bali in Wet Season — A Hidden Goldmine
Half the crowd, all the waves — why November to March can be the smartest time to surf Bali (if you know which coast to chase).
Everyone tells you May-October is Bali surf season. They're not wrong — but they're also not telling you the whole story. Wet season has its own brilliance and a fraction of the crowd.
Why wet season works
The trade winds switch from SE (offshore on the Bukit) to NW. That kills west-coast spots — but it makes the east coast SING. Keramas, Sanur and Nusa Dua see consistent E swells with offshore mornings.
The east coast lineup
- Keramas — wet-season machine, world-tour quality, dawn patrol essential
- Sanur Reef — long rights, advanced only, less crowded than Bukit equivalents
- Nusa Dua — high tide right reef, intermediate-friendly
- Greenball — when it works, it's hollow
Reality check
Wet season ≠ rains all day. Most days it's sunny mornings, afternoon thunderstorms 30 minutes long, then back to sun. Schedule surf for dawn, errands for noon, naps for the storm.
Pro tip
Bring a $30 dry bag. Carry your phone, wallet and passport in it on every scooter ride from December to February. The afternoon downpour is enough to drown an iPhone.
Frequently Asked Questions
→Which east-coast spot is the wet-season MVP?
Keramas, by a long shot. From late November through early March, you get NW offshore winds, consistent E groundswell, and world-tour-quality right-handers with less than half the dry-season Bukit crowd. Dawn patrol from Canggu (1h drive) is the move.
→Are there waves at Uluwatu in wet season?
Occasionally. SW swells still happen even in wet season; when they coincide with light NW winds, Uluwatu can come back online for a few hours. Check magicseaweed daily — when you see SW + light winds in December-February, drop everything and drive south.
→Should I bring a different quiver for wet season?
Slightly. Keramas favours a punchy shortboard or step-up rather than the longboards/mids that work on the Bukit's softer west-coast days. If you're switching seasons mid-trip, pick up a 6'0-6'2 shortboard from PASARA's used market and resell on departure.
