Fin Setup Theory for Bali — Twin, Thruster, Quad?
How to choose fins for Bali's variety of waves — fast Bukit reefs, soft Berawa beach breaks, and everything between.
Bali's wave types are wildly varied. The fin setup that flies at Uluwatu falls flat at Old Man's. Here's what each setup is actually for.
Thruster (3 fins) — the universal default
Best for: medium-to-fast waves with vertical sections. Uluwatu, Bingin, Padang. Provides drive + control. The setup 80% of Bali surfers ride 80% of the time.
Quad (4 fins) — the speed setup
Best for: long-walled point breaks, fast soft beach breaks. Medewi, soft Canggu days. Less drag, more glide. Trickier to turn vertically.
Twin (2 fins) — the fun setup
Best for: small-to-medium glassy days at Berawa, Old Man's, Echo Beach. Fast, loose, and absolutely fun. Useless above head-high.
Single fin (longboard / mid-length only)
Classic. Stiffer, smoother. Required for traditional longboarding, optional for mid-lengths. Don't use on a shortboard unless you're an expert.
Pro tip
Bring 2 fin sets to Bali: a thruster for everyday surf and a quad for those windless 'glass off' afternoon sessions where speed matters more than turning.
Where to buy fins in Bali
Surf Discount, Drifter, and most board shops carry FCS II and Futures. Fakes exist — verify the box logo, weight (real FCS is ~95g per fin), and material flex.
Frequently Asked Questions
→What's the best universal fin setup for Bali?
Thruster (3 fins). It's the everyday default — handles Uluwatu's vertical sections, Canggu beach breaks, and everything between. 80% of Bali surfers ride a thruster 80% of the time and it just works.
→When does a quad actually beat a thruster?
Long-walled point breaks (Medewi), fast soft afternoon Canggu sessions, and any glassy day where speed matters more than tight pivot turns. Quads have 15-20% less drag, so they fly through soft sections that bog a thruster down.
→Are the FCS fins sold at Canggu surf shops genuine?
Mostly yes at established shops (Surf Discount, Drifter). Always check: real FCS II fins weigh ~95g each, have crisp logo printing on the box, and feel stiff but flexible at the tip. If a 'set' costs IDR 200k versus the usual IDR 1.0-1.5M, walk away — they're knockoffs.
