Medewi: Bali's Longest Left and the Ultimate Day Trip
200+ metres of perfect cobblestone left, 2.5 hours from Canggu. Why Medewi is the day trip every longboarder in Bali should make at least once.
Most Bali surfers never make it past Tanah Lot. They're missing the longest, mellowest left in the entire archipelago. Medewi is point break heaven — and a 2.5h drive that turns every Bali trip into a story.
What you're getting
On a clean head-high SW swell, Medewi delivers waves that run for 200 metres or more. Cobblestone bottom, shoulder-high walls, plenty of section choice. It's a longboarder's paradise but a great mid-length wave too.
When to go
May to September is prime. Dawn patrol is essential — the wind picks up by 9 AM. Avoid weekends if you can; locals get the place to themselves on weekdays.
Logistics
- Drive: 2-3h from Canggu depending on traffic. Leave at 03:30 for dawn patrol.
- Stay: simple beachside guesthouses for a one-night stop
- Food: warungs along the main road, very affordable
- Crowd: medium — bigger than locals expect, smaller than the Bukit
Boards to bring
Longboard, mid-length, and a small fish for the inside section. Avoid pure shortboards — the wave is too mellow to make them sing.
Frequently Asked Questions
→Why is Medewi specifically a longboard wave?
It's a soft, slow-breaking left over a cobblestone point that peels for 100-300m on a clean SW swell. The wave doesn't have steep sections that reward a shortboard; instead it rewards trim, glide and noseriding — exactly what longboards (and mid-lengths) are built for.
→What time should I leave Canggu for a Medewi dawn patrol?
03:30 is the realistic departure — you'll be in the water by 6:00 AM, surfing the offshore glass before the wind picks up at 9 AM. Driving back at 11 AM gets you home by 13:30, leaving the rest of your day intact.
→Are there places to stay overnight near Medewi?
Yes — basic Medewi Beach Cottages and a handful of warungs/homestays for IDR 250-500k/night. If you want to surf 4+ sessions over 2 days, an overnight is the move. Bring your own boards and supplies; the village is small.
