Nusa Lembongan Surf Trip — A Complete Guide

30 minutes by speedboat from Sanur, Lembongan packs three world-class reef breaks, no traffic and a different vibe. Here's how to do it right.

If you've spent more than two weeks on the Bukit, do yourself a favour and ride the speedboat across the channel. Lembongan is what Bali was 30 years ago — quiet, reef-fringed, and rich with empty waves on the right swell.

The three breaks

  • Playgrounds: friendly mechanical lefts and rights, the bread-and-butter wave
  • Lacerations: heavy, shallow right — only paddle out if you mean it
  • Shipwrecks: long mellower right, longboard heaven on a clean swell

Boat access logistics

Most surf is a short boat ride from Mushroom Bay. Local boats charge by the hour or by the session. Hire a boatman who's been in the lineup — they know which peak is firing on the day.

Where to stay

Mushroom Bay is closest to the lineup. Jungutbatu has more food and budget options. The island is small enough that everywhere is accessible by scooter.

Don't forget

  • Cash — ATMs are limited and unreliable
  • Reef booties — the inside section is sharp
  • A second leash — Lacerations will eat one
  • Sunscreen — there's no shade on the boat

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the fast boat from Sanur take?

Standard 35-45 minutes one way for IDR 250-400k return. Boats run roughly hourly between 7 AM and 4 PM. Buy your ticket at the harbour; pre-booked online tickets are the same price but force a fixed time.

Are the surf spots crowded on Lembongan?

Way less than Bali — but not empty. On a quality day, expect 20-30 surfers at Shipwrecks or Lacerations versus 80+ at the same-quality wave at Uluwatu. Weekends can spike when Bali residents day-trip over.

Is Shipwrecks safe for an upper-intermediate surfer?

Yes on a clean 1-1.5m day with the right tide (mid to low). Above 2m it's a serious wave with shallow reef and strong currents — only for advanced surfers comfortable with reef risk. Always paddle out with a local first time.
