Surfboard Ding Repair in Bali — DIY vs Pro
Solarez at the warung, fibreglass at the shaper, full re-glass at the factory — when each option makes sense and what they cost.
Bali has more reef than rideable wave on some swells. Dings are inevitable. Here's the decision tree from 5 seasons of Indonesian repairs.
DIY: Solarez (small dings <2cm)
Sold at every warung surf shop in Canggu/Uluwatu for IDR 80-120k. Squeeze in, smooth out, cure 3 minutes in direct sun. Fixes 80% of session-ending dings in 5 minutes.
Pro shaper (medium dings, fin box, stringer cracks)
Look for a workshop with proper sanders and resin (not glue). Canggu and Uluwatu have several reliable ones charging IDR 150-400k per ding. Turnaround: same-day for small, 24h for fin-box repairs.
Full re-glass (delamination, hidden water damage)
Factory job at Bali shapers like 47 or DOWN. IDR 1.5-3M, 5-10 days. Only worth it on premium boards (Channel Islands, JS, Pyzel) — for a generic pop-out, sell the board for parts.
Pro tip
Always rinse a fresh ding with fresh water, then keep the board out of seawater for 12+ hours before repair. Trapped saltwater inside the foam will resurface as yellowing weeks later.
Recommended Bali repair shops
Search PASARA's directory for 'ding repair' shops verified by other surfers. Avoid the random warung that does it on the side — you'll pay twice when it cracks open after 5 sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
→Can I really fix a small ding with Solarez in 5 minutes?
Yes — for dings under 2cm not near the stringer, fin boxes, or rails. Squeeze in Solarez (IDR 80-120k at any warung surf shop), smooth with the included plastic spreader, hold in direct sun for 3 minutes. The board is back in the water before your wax dries.
→When does DIY become a false economy?
Anything near the fin boxes, near the stringer, or wider than 3cm. Bad DIY repairs trap saltwater; over weeks the board yellows from inside, foam softens, and the original IDR 100k repair turns into a IDR 1.5M re-glass. For anything serious, walk to a pro shaper.
→What if a ding happens while I'm in the water?
If foam is exposed and seawater is getting in, exit the water immediately and rinse with fresh water at the warung. Keep the board out of the ocean for 12+ hours before any repair — this lets trapped saltwater drain. Otherwise the patch will yellow within weeks.
