Tropical Surfboard Storage — Avoiding the Bali Yellow
Bali's UV, humidity and salt eat boards alive. Here's how to store yours so it survives your stay — and resells for a fair price.
A polyurethane shortboard left on a Bali balcony for 3 months will yellow, soften and lose 20% of its resale value. None of it is necessary.
The 3 enemies
- UV — direct sun breaks down resin in 4-6 hours of cumulative exposure per day
- Humidity — accelerates resin yellowing dramatically vs dry climates
- Heat — sustained 35°C+ delaminates the lamination layer
Storage rules
- NEVER store on a roof rack or open balcony
- Indoor only — under bed, in wardrobe, or wall-mounted in a shaded room
- Vertical position with tail down (not nose down — stresses the rocker)
- Cover with a board sock if dust/cats are an issue
Pro tip
After every session: rinse with fresh water (yes, even your wax), wipe rails with a dry towel, and store immediately. The 5 minutes between rinse and storage is when most dings get inflicted by careless tossing.
Long-term storage (1 month+)
Strip the wax. Apply a fresh basecoat only. Store in a sealed board bag with a silica gel pack. Boards stored this way for 6 months come out indistinguishable from when they went in.
Frequently Asked Questions
→How fast does UV actually damage a board in Bali?
A polyurethane shortboard left on a sunny balcony for 30 days will visibly yellow (deck and rails turn cream/amber) and lose 15-20% of resale value. After 90 days it's structurally compromised — resin breaks down, lamination weakens, foam softens. Storage matters this much.
→Is wall-mounted storage safe for boards?
Yes, if vertical with the tail down (not nose down — that stresses the rocker). Use board socks or padded straps where the board touches the rack. Avoid horizontal wall mounts; over months, the rocker can flatten under the board's own weight.
→Should I strip the wax before long-term storage?
If storing 1+ months, yes. Old wax melts in heat, hardens at corners, and traps dust inside the wax bumps that's a nightmare to remove later. Strip with a wax comb + iso/sun method, store with a fresh basecoat only, re-wax fully when you return.
