Iconic cliff break, Bali’s holy grail

Uluwatu — Frequently asked

What's the best tide for surfing Uluwatu?

Mid tide, dropping. Pre-low can hit reef cobblestones in the Racetrack section, while high tide is mushy and hard to read. Sweet spot is roughly 0.6 to 1.2m on the BMKG tide chart, ideally on the way down.

What skill level do I need to surf Uluwatu?

Solid intermediate to advanced. You need a reliable late-takeoff drop, a clean bottom turn, and the lung capacity to hold a 12-second hold-down. If you can't comfortably swim 500m flat, build that fitness BEFORE paddling out.

How do I get into the water at Uluwatu?

Through 'The Cave' — a small natural opening in the cliff. Time your jump between sets, and use the rip current that runs out from the cave to assist your paddle. Don't try to enter from the rocks left of the cave.
