Best Surfboards for Beginners in Bali

From foamies at Old Man's to your first epoxy mid-length: how to pick a beginner board that survives Bali's reefs, crowds and humidity.

Bali is one of the best places on the planet to learn how to surf — but only if you ride the right board for the right wave. Show up to Uluwatu with a foam top and you'll wear the reef. Show up to Berawa with a high-performance shortboard and you'll never paddle into anything. This guide cuts through the noise.

1. The 'first 30 sessions' rule

Until you can confidently take off, trim and turn, you want volume. Lots of it. The single biggest reason people stop progressing in Bali is they upgrade to a thinner, shorter board way too early. Resist.

Pro tip

Rule of thumb: bodyweight in kg + 30 = minimum litres for your first board. 70 kg → 100L. You'll outgrow it eventually — but you'll learn 3× faster on it.

2. Pick the spot, then the board

  • Old Man's / Berawa: 8'0 soft-top OR 7'2 funboard / mid-length
  • Echo Beach: 7'0 mid-length (avoid soft-tops here, the lineup is too aggressive)
  • Lovina (wet season tiny days): 8'0 foamie
  • Balangan on a small day: 7'2 mid-length

3. Soft-top vs hard-top

Soft-tops paddle faster, hurt less, and forgive bad form. Hard-tops surf better. For your first 20–30 sessions in Bali, get the foam — it's safer for you, your fellow surfers, and Bali's reefs.

4. Where to actually buy

New beginner boards in Bali are heavily marked up. The used market is far better value — most boards at PASARA are listed by departing travellers offloading near-new boards at 30–50% off retail. Search by hub to find one that's already on the right beach.

5. The four red flags

  • Stringer cracks across the deck — board is structurally compromised
  • Yellow tinge in white foam — water has been inside the foam, will be heavier
  • Sun-faded deck pad — board has cooked on a roof rack, glass might be brittle
  • FCS plug wobble — fin boxes can be repaired but it's a hidden cost

Frequently Asked Questions

What size soft-top should a 70 kg beginner ride in Bali?

8'0 with at least 100 litres of volume. The 'bodyweight in kg + 30 = minimum litres' rule keeps you paddling fast and surfing in green water within 5-6 sessions instead of 20+.

Is a 7'2 mid-length too advanced for a complete beginner?

For your very first sessions, yes — start on the 8'0 soft-top. Once you can pop up reliably and ride green waves on 5+ sessions, the 7'2 mid-length is the perfect 'second board' progression and works at every Canggu spot.

Can I learn at Uluwatu or Bingin?

Absolutely not. Uluwatu, Bingin and Padang are reef breaks with experienced lineups, fast take-offs and sharp coral bottoms. Stick to Old Man's, Berawa or Lovina (wet season) for your first 30+ sessions.
